【The Basics of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple】
<The head temple of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism, boasting over 1,080 years of history>
The temple was founded in 940 during the Heian period. It was established by kantyou daishoujyou to pray for the end of the rebellion led by Taira no Masakado.
<Over 10 million visitors annually>
It is said to offer diverse blessings, from finding a good marriage to advancing one’s career, and visitors can receive prayers and amulets tailored to their specific wishes.
<The Principal Image, Fudō Myōō>
The guardian deity of the Buddha’s path, who saves all beings in distress, never abandoning even demons, but instead admonishing, guiding, and leading them.
<The Only Two Statues of Fudō Myōō in the World>
This principal image and the principal statue enshrined in the Great Pagoda of Peace at the head temple Naritasan Shinshō-ji differ in size by about threefold, yet their form and appearance are utterly identical. In fact, both were sculpted by Kyoto’s master Buddha sculptors during the same period, within the same artistic tradition. The statue at Hōrin-ji, created earlier, is said to have served as the prototype or trial model for the colossal elephant at Shinshō-ji. After its completion, it underwent the soul-consecration and eye-opening ceremony at Shinshō-ji Temple, and was welcomed to this temple on the very same day.
Would you believe it, Nishiwaki City is home to a branch temple of Naritasan Shinshoji—the temple ranked second nationwide for visitor numbers. Fudō Myōō (Naritasan Shinshōji Temple) and Enma Daimyō (Hōkiji Temple, Hasedera, Nara) are rather favourites of mine. Thanks to this Hōrin-ji temple, I learnt the protective deity for the Year of the Rat, senjyu Kannon bosatsu, and its sacred mantra.
Naritasan Shinshōji holds its bean-throwing ceremony every year, doesn’t it, with celebrities appearing on television? This year, oono sato appeared, didn’t he?
Last time I visited Tokyo, the Tokyo Skytree was the main attraction, so next time I go to Tokyo, I’d like to base myself in Hakone Onsen and visit Mount Takao, Hie Shrine in Akasaka, Naritasan Shinshoji, and Disneyland.
