Naniwa’s Kitchen, lined with fresh fish shops and fruit stores. A popular area where you can enjoy a variety of takeout gourmet options.
The main purpose this time was to see kabuki at the National Bunraku Theater. I parked near the theater and was heading toward it when I stumbled upon Kuromon Market. Couldn’t resist snapping a photo. They were selling kimchi from Tsuruhashi and other items.
<Passing on the Traditional Performing Art of Bunraku to the Next Generation> A hall of Japanese traditional performing arts dedicated to preserving and promoting Kamigata performing arts, also training successors in the roles of narrator (tayū), shamisen player, and puppet manipulator. Centered around Ningyō Jōruri Bunraku, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, it also presents traditional Japanese music and stage performances. The small hall hosts rakugo storytelling, manzai comedy, and nagauta ballad performances.
Designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa.
The design was by that Mr. Kisho Kurokawa. Was it the National Art Center in Roppongi? I remember going to see it when I visited Tokyo with close friends during my student days. To think that the place where kabuki was performed this time was designed by Kisho Kurokawa… I was truly shocked.

I visited Nishinomiya Gardens, which has been climbing the sales rankings among shopping malls nationwide. What’s amazing about Nishinomiya Gardens is that, like Hawaii’s Ala Moana Center, it naturally combines a shopping mall with a department store (Nordstrom), plus it even has a medical mall. Many of the restaurants and eateries as tenants are among my favorites.
Especially Kanda Soba—it’s open-air with a great atmosphere for dining. I enjoyed a leisurely, delicious bowl of soba. As a soba lover, it’s no wonder it ranks so highly. I had some delicious tempura soba.
